Some radios are workhorses. The Yaesu FT-2980R is one of them — a no-frills, single-band VHF FM transceiver that quietly does its job without asking for much in return. Up to 80 watts of output power, a clean front panel (and complicated Yaesu menus!), and — crucially for my situation — completely fanless operation.

My previous mobile radio had a cooling fan, which made perfect sense in a vehicle. In the living room, parked on the stereo shelf between the Xbox and the Homey Pro, it was a different story. The constant fan noise wore thin quickly. The FT-2980R solved that entirely. It runs cool and silent, which makes it ideal for a radio that’s often on scanning local repeaters.

And there’s plenty to scan. The local anchor is LA5BR on Rundemanen, the mountain that dominates the Bergen skyline — reliable and just a few kilometres away on the other side of the Bergen Byfjorden. But it is also a pleasure hearing further afield. LA5VR on Stord to the south comes in with strong, consistent signals, as does LA8GR over in Gulen to the north. These are not marginal contacts — they’re solid, everyday paths.

The one that still puts a smile on my face is LA6WR on Lønahorgi in Voss, roughly 71 kilometres away. It’s not a guaranteed path, but when conditions cooperate it’s a reminder of just how far 2 metres can reach with a decent antenna and some elevation on the other end. Speaking of antennas — more on those in the Antennas section.

If you’re looking for a living-room-friendly VHF radio that doesn’t compromise on power, the FT-2980R deserves a closer look.
